HPL recognizes the right of individuals to express opposition to an author, presenter, performer, creator, or creator's ideas or their creative expression in items selected and programs delivered by the Library. While individuals have the right to reject items or programs they do not approve of for themselves, they do not have the right to restrict the freedom of others. At HPL, many points of view and modes of expression can be examined without hindrance. No ideas or opinions have universal acceptance and the use of language and visual depiction, either descriptive or expressive, can stimulate controversy.
Individuals who feel an item, program, or exhibit falls outside the criteria outlined in the Intellectual Freedom Policy linked below, can share their concerns with Library Staff. Residents of Hamilton who are unsatisfied with the response can complete the form below.
- HPL's Management team reviews all formal complaints and engages appropriate Staff and Management to examine the item based on the request submitted.
- The decision on this or any subsequent reviews will reflect the principles outlined in the Library's policies, including our Collections Policy, Working with Us Policy and Intellectual Freedom Policy.
- When the review is complete, the user is provided a written explanation of the decision via email.
