Renovations are currently underway for the 2nd floor Central Children's Area. Programs are still being offered as scheduled and there is a temporary pop-up Children’s Area on the northeast side of the 2nd floor (near the Piano Room), including access to collections and train tables. As of Monday, March 2, Sherwood Branch's 2nd floor is closed due to renovations. Makerspace, Children and Teen's collection are temporarily available on the 1st floor. Summer Reading Buddies
Youth Opportunity: 14 - 18 years old
Program Overview
Reading Buddies is a program designed to help children who are in grades one through six practice their reading skills out loud with teen volunteers. This program runs from July to August at select branches. Limited positions available.
Time Commitment
- 1 hour, once a week
- July 13 – August 21
Qualifications
- speak and write English well
- experience and/or interested in working with children and literacy
- able to work with children on a one-to-one basis as well as in a group environment
- act as a good role model for children
- be reliable, patient and trustworthy
Responsibilities
- attend a training session before starting
- meet with children registered in the program at the library at a set time weekly
- help children with their reading
- provide positive feedback and encouragement
- always abide by the Library’s Code of Conduct
